Guevara’s Guerrillas: A Brief Synopsis
I attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison during the latter half of the 1960’s. At UW I elected to take a course in Greek and Roman Culture. The TA who taught the course was named Saul. He also tutored me in Greek. We hit it off right away. Saul lived in a funky apartment not too far off campus with two roommates, Jack and Will. I soon began hanging out there. It didn’t take us long to find out that we shared a love of soccer.
UW had an active Intramural Sports Program which included spring soccer. We decided that we were going form a team. But what were we going call ourselves? We stayed up all night drinking Mate. Mate is a beverage made by steeping the dried leaves of yerba mate. It is the national drink of Argentina and has very high caffeine content. We were members of the Bascom Hill Volunteer Ski Patrol, therefore experienced in serious group activities. We all fancied ourselves as young revolutionaries in those days; and one of our heroes was Che Guevara. In the Cuban Revolution, with a handful of men, he defeated Batista’s armies by using guerrilla tactics. We became Guevara’s Guerillas! [READ MORE]
